What's in my Ears

  • Lifehouse - Am I Ever Gonna Find Out

Am I Ever Gonna Find Out
    Lifehouse: Stanley Climbfall

Four boys from an LA Vineyard church formed Lifehouse's second album Stanley Climbfall, based on the idea of the Christian walking, standing, climbing and falling only to repeat the cycle. Its an important lesson and one that still resonates with me. The track i've chosen is pretty amazing because it has such a moody opening riff, its grabbing me right inside my gut and won't let go. It also helps to show the yearning of Wade as he wonders will he find a way to stop living in the past and move on. His parents divorced when he was 12 and this obviously has affected his lyrics, more so in the 2005 album "Lifehouse" but its still evident here. 7 years on we're still talking about Lifehouse....can it really have been 7 years since their debut!?! Time is flying too quickly! (*****)

  • The Feeling - I Want You Now

    I Want You Now
The Feeling: Twelve Stops and Home

REALLLY refreshing album! Loved it when I heard sewn but loved it even more when I heard the other album tracks soon to be singles. Underground and under-hyped, just the way it should be! Really really clean sound that just works! Slightly Controversial but really like I Want You Now for the sheer intenisty and up swing in the melody. Really well chosen as an opening song so yeah! As the Doc says... Rock-A-Lula! (*****)

  • The Kooks - Naive

    Naive
    The Kooks: Inside In/Inside Out

Nice track, def the standout track from the album and worth a listen, think it reminded me of my time at Stran...... (****)

  • Panic! At The Disco - I Write Sins Not Tragedies

    I Write Sins Not Tragedies
Panic! At The Disco: A Fever You Can't Sweat Out

Fallout Boy-esque but quite cool....i like the premise of the song, suppose it reminds me of a few stories i heard about and winced over. Thank goodness my friends aren't mentalists and have actually made good choices over their wives. Anyways great track and nice to rock out to....Never gonna be a big hitter (****)

  • Ben Folds - There's Always Someone Cooler Than You

There's Always Someone Cooler Than You
    Ben Folds: Sunny16

.....Smile Like you've got nothing to prove No matter what you might do There's always someone out there cooler than you.... I'll stick the full lyrics up sometime but its happy and bright and lets me know that I'm a screw up :) Ok so i'm being defeatest but who cares, It also reminds of the times I go to the Empire and see the cool hip happening people. It reminds of two aquaintance I know, the first, a hero of a musician that is so talented but just tries too hard and is too cool for school, the other, that one hot girl everyone knows who tries too hard when her real beauty would just shine through if she let it. Why can't people see its ok to be freaky and misshapen.....oddness can't be replicated it just happens.... and when it does, its flippin attractive! (*****)

  • Sister Hazel - All For You

    All For You
    Sister Hazel: Somewhere More Familiar

Thanks to Ryan Irvine for this little gem, great band from Gainesville Florida. Originally I thought they were some obscure lot from here, according to Wiki, apparently not! Great little track called All For You! Loving it but send it to a friend recently....had interesting results! :) (*****)

  • Supertramp - Give A Little Bit

    Give A Little Bit
Supertramp: Even in the Quietest Moments

Give a little bit.....described as a sunny acoustic-driven track is great. I've had the pleasure of entertaining lead guitarist Carl Verhayen and bassist Cliff Hugo in a bizzare turn of events that let me do lights for a school gig! Totally mental, the lads are amazing and this track is just so cool. If my namesake Dr McClean (Annie) hadn't have switched me on to this band I'd be def lost! V, V cool :) (****)

  • Goo Goo Dolls - Dizzy

    Dizzy
Goo Goo Dolls: Dizzy Up The Girl

Dizzy up the girl....another album that changed my teenage years! Wow! From the opening riff of Dizzy to the final exit music of Hate this Place I just go from track to track in awe. Still going although best known for Iris, they deserve better success than they get. For me, Dizzy gets my vote, any song that has the illustration "You're monochrome delirious You're nothing that you seem" gets my vote! Its that kinda "nice girl when she's nice, horrific car crash for preschool children when she's in a bad mood!" (*****)

  • Thom Yorke - Analyse

    Analyse
    Thom Yorke: The Eraser

The Prestige! What a movie! Bought Mike the Thom Yorke album for his birthday, not bad I thought but still not really me. Found it on the Ipod one day which was cool but still not me. When I heard the track 'Analyse' as the exit music for Christopher Nolan's 'The Prestige' I was blown away. What a storyline, Victorian set pieces are very me, so yeah, the song clicked and made sense and allowed me to access what I felt was initially a very inaccessible album. Watch the movie, unlock the door, you're in for a treat. (*****)

  • Matchbox 20 - Long Day

    Long Day
Matchbox 20: Yourself Or Someone Like You

Rob Thomas and the lads, i've really got a thing for one hit wonderish bands that maintain the centre ground in American Rock and Pop....its embarrassing. But i still can't shake the fact that this song is me in a bad mood. Imagine Sy like this and you might just see what i'm like sometimes (*****)

  • Vertical Horizon - Everything You Want

    Everything You Want
    Vertical Horizon: Vertical Horizon

Wow what a song! It came, it stayed a bit, it rocked my socks and then vertical horizon just vanished! Quite depressing actually! But still it switched me on for a while, its a pity REM and Alanis got there first..... (*****)

  • The Fray - How To Save A Life

    How To Save A Life
The Fray: How To Save A Life

And so the habit of premiering new bands on tv shows trundles on! Pioneered by Dawson's Creek and made famous by The OC this soundtrack sampler genre has been really useful for some artists who would tend to be one hit wonders! The Fray could go that way but its always nice to have a track you'll remember in years to come! Kinda like the next three i've chosen!

  • Mason - Perfect (Exceeder)

    Perfect (Exceeder)
    Mason: Perfect (Exceeder)

Ok ok so slate me! Its catchy! I kinda like it and if I were a club DJ I'd know the place would be bouncin! Its just really different! (***)

  • Fall Out Boy - This Aint a Scene... It's A Goddamn Arms Race

This Aint a Scene... It's A Goddamn Arms Race
Fall Out Boy: Infinity On High

Fantastic Track to the new album from Fallout Boy. I think they're going in a new direction to avoid riding the EMO wave any longer. My chemical romance should follow their lead before going stale soon. The rest of the album is very very good and should be the one to let them make a heavy dent on the scene at long last (*****)

  • Mika - Relax Take It Easy

    Relax Take It Easy
    Mika: Life in Cartoon Motion

Its Freddyesque, its cool, its got a funky techno beat. The lebanese lad is doing quite well for himself....but will it last? I'm rather concerned this very capable and deep performer might go the way of the Scissor Sisters....He's the epitomy of everything student culture loves about that forbidden camp dance to Elton John at Midnight.....only legitimate. Liking it but not sure if its going to last! As one person I know said "Give it 12 months and you might be taking out a restraining order!" Mika will certainly be dividing opinion. (****)

  • Bell X1 - Just Like Mr Benn

    Just Like Mr Benn
    Bell X1: Flock

Nice Song, I'd like to find another word to describe it, but Nice works...... Ok so its again wistful as hell, the boy's really doing the tortured soul thing very well. But he references Mr Benn, a kids TV show from my time about a guy who went off to a fancy dress shop, stuck on a new outfit each lunchbreak and went off on an adventure.....cool stuff but he always needed a new adventure, what a junkie! But very similar to this woman being described, she always needs something new. (****)

  • Foy Vance - Billie Jean

    Billie Jean
    Foy Vance: Indiscriminate Act Kindness

Its easily the best acoustic cover I've ever heard. I mean ok No One Knows is good......but this outstrips it and runs off into the distance like Linford Christie. Its wistful, frustrated, rousing, powerful and has more emotion in it that Halle Berry's Oscar speech. Definitely one to watch and download for the Ipod (****)

  • Fono - Now She's 24

    Now She's 24
    Fono: Goesaroundcomesaround

Hmmm, on the verge of 24, it kinda clicks. Fono were another band when I was in my teens, and its the first Christian band to feature on the list. Its a song about a girl whose seen the bottom of her world fall out and everything she thought was sweet was really sugar coated poison. She ends up giving her life to Christ and begins her journey of self discovery. Nice rock sound, dunno, one album made but still resonates with me. Cheers Walshy for the tip off back in '99. They really clicked.....I remember non-christians loving them too. Kerranng even did a spread on them...pity it was one album (*****)

  • Finch - Letters To You

    Letters To You
Finch: What It Is To Burn

lol......Alan Duddy has a lot to be thanked for! I remember his time when he arrived in Culmore 3 and switched me on to Finch.....Described as Alt. Rock or "Post-Hardcore" I personally feel they're a Jimmy Eat World that's gone Emo to the hilt. The album this is from was probably their best ever, and it had a class wee acoustic version of letters as a UK bonus track. (****)

  • Duke Special - Wake Up Scarlett

    Wake Up Scarlett
Duke Special: Songs From The Deep Forest

Ok so the Duke had to make an appearance sometime didn't he!?! But why choose this one i hear you ask!?!? Its not one of his most prolific!? Ah, but allow me to explain! Its the first track on the Deep Forest Album, and I've always believed if an album is worthy it needs to grab you by the balls and literally move you by force far, far away from the off button. It was also a free download on Itunes and a great track to try and draw people into Duke's sound, its got those Rufus Wainright sounds and he can be linked to a few more artists but at the end of the day its the Duke, a very unique and deserving artist who has begun to carve out an excellent niche for himself. Oh and my favourite lyric? "Tripping through the birdsong, just as guilty as a gun....Dropping like a suicidal planet in the sun"........quality! (*****)

  • The Fratellis - Whistle For The Choir

    Whistle For The Choir
    The Fratellis: Costello Music

Interesting this band....Zane Lowe on Radio 1 *loves* these guys and they sound like quite a riot on tour! I have to say the rolling bassline reminds me of how people used to compose, its always moving always going somewhere, all it needs is a tuba player to play it and we're really in brass band territory! So ok, I know women hate being sung to, but its a great track to imagine some English geezer singing to his Missus about how much he wouldnt mind taking her out for the night! One of the opening lines is a cracker...."Is it out of line, if I was to bold, and say, would you be mine?" Its just really connecting with me for some reason! All answers on a postcard! (****)

  • Jose Gonzalez - Crosses

    Crosses
    Jose Gonzalez: Veneer

Wow.... ok so everyone knows the Sony Bravia TV ad that sent Jose into the stratosphere and don't get me wrong Heartbeats is extremely inspirational and amazing but its a cover! Yeah! It was created by a Swedish Indie/Pop outfit called "The Knife" back in 2002. Did you know Jose was also Swedish? His parents are Argentinian though. So I preferred to find affinity with one of his own creations and crosses is my choice! Its haunting repeated chordal system and expertly constructed lyrics make it an intriguing yet fantastic song. (****)

  • Stephen Fretwell - Emily

    Emily
    Stephen Fretwell: Magpie

Wow....this song is mindblowing! I heard it once on a random commercial station here in Northern Ireland and was instantly drawn by its wistful and frustrated overtones. Plus the name Emily is pretty nice! So the guy kinda can't get over this girl who made him feel very alive but treated him really poorly. It reverberated a bit! Anyways, obscure, unknown artist who's from Liverpool, you need to find this album! (****)

  • Semisonic - Closing Time

    Closing Time
    Semisonic: Feeling Strangely Fine

One of the bands of my teens. It was September 1999, Secret Smile had just hit no. 13 in the UK Singles chart and I had found such an affinity with this band. They followed it up with the excellently crafted Closing Time. Although released in the UK after Secret Smile, it was released first in the states and hit No.1 on the US Billboard charts. Oddly Closing Time, according to my research is about the womb!?! I kid you not! Its about babies leaving the women and references to alcohol are about pregnant women not drinking....Thats what the drummer Jacob Slichter said in his book "So You Wanna Be A Rock & Roll Star" How Bizarre, How Bizzare! (*****)

  • The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations

    Good Vibrations
    The Beach Boys: Smiley Smile

Love this song! Would definitely give it a 5* rating for the sheer legacy of the song! The sound of the electro-theremin just stands out as a real summery vibe and it always gets me right in the stomach everytime I hear it. Please go put it on right now and sit back and soak in the sound.... (*****)

  • Roger Sanchez - Another Chance

    Another Chance
    Roger Sanchez: First Contact

Intriguing this one....Its fast paced yet strangely ambient....Dr Dick will love me for including this one, but I must admit its the only real dance track I've continually gone back to....maybe check out the afterlife remix if you want to get the real ambient feel. I just think Sanchez blew the world apart back in 2001 it said something about culture, society and life in New York for a girl with a giant shrinking heart. (*****)

  • Queens of the Stone Age - No One Knows

    No One Knows
Queens of the Stone Age: Songs For The Deaf

Great Track, very well crafted and a fantastic inclusion on the Radio 1 LiveLlounge disc. Made me go back and give "Songs for the Deaf" another listen. Its refreshing to hear Dave Grohl drum so frantically and remember what he was first famous for rather than fronting the bright eyed bushy tailed "Foo Fighters." Who are great but its almost like McCartney and Wings. (****)
